The citizens of Yadkinville voted and approved allowing the sale of beer and liquor.
Sixty percent of voters supported the sale of beer and liquor drinks as well as the opening of liquor stores in the town.
Similarly to Boone, Yadkinville’s neighboring town Jonesville held a
vote to decide whether to make the county wet and the proposal was
defeated.
Jonesville’s interim town manager Ron Niland said while the town had
the right to vote on this decision, he thinks it definitely lost out on
increased property and sales tax.
John Pittman campaigned in Jonesville against alcohol proposals, saying
his Bible makes it very clear that drinking alcohol and making it
available are wrong.
North Carolina is a “local-option” state, which allows local voters to
decide for themselves on permitting the sale of alcohol in their area.
Students at Appalachian State University are split on whether Boone should remain dry.
“Instead of allowing easier access of liquor to underage kids, we
should be trying to cut down on drinking among students,” freshman
physics major Adrienne M. Rumley.
Senior criminal justice major Sherron E Ashby, however, said she would
support a vote for a completely wet county, “especially seeing as it is
a college campus.”
Many students who want liquor drive to the ABC store on Blowing Rock Road, about 5 miles from Appalachian State’s campus.
The money from the sale of alcohol at the ABC store goes to Blowing Rock.
