Senior day is scheduled for the last home game of the season, and the Appalachian State University field hockey team made the day even more special by defeating Catawba University, 3-0.

It was the team’s second home game of the season and the first win for ASU. The win ended an 11-game losing streak.

Even with the win, Appalachian was not completely happy.

ASU’s Erica Muschamp (7) looks to turn and shoot in the 3-0 win against Catawba on Wednesday night.
“It was good to pull off a win, but we didn’t play that well,” senior Shannon R. Fitzpatrick said. “I think we played down to their level because we are used to tougher competition.”

Senior Erica J. Muschamp scored the first goal for the Mountaineers just 4:12 into the match. Muschamp followed her first shot, which was blocked by the Catawba goalkeeper, and rebounded the ball into the back of the goal.

“We got shots and we got some goals this game, which is an improvement over everything else we have been doing,” ASU head coach Brandi Alexander said. “We just need to make sure we keep up our consistency.”

The road to the first win of the season has been long and harsh, Alexander said.

The Mountaineers had 29 shots with 20 of those on target.  Muschamp had nine of the shots on target and four other players had two shots on goal.

The Mountaineers’ second goal came in the 22nd minute from a Muschamp pass to freshman Amanda M. Young.

Directly after halftime, in the 41st minute, junior Alicia A. Larkins passed the ball to Muschamp who made the score 3-0.

The goal put Muschamp as the team leader in goals and Larkins as the leader in assists.
ASU, now 1-11, will take a trip to California this week.

ASU faces Stanford University Oct. 12, the University of California Oct. 13 and the University of the Pacific Oct. 15.
