Something new is cooking in Boone.

Panera Bread, a nationally franchised café and bakery, opens in the Boone Mall January 2007.

Panera offers many fresh menu items to customers including made-to-order sandwiches and salads, bread made from scratch and soups served in bread bowls, according to Panera.com.

Also, many Panera locations feature WiFi Internet access.

Panera Bread opens in the Boone Mall in January 2007.

Freshman elementary education major Molly K. Maness worked at Panera Bread in High Point for one year. She will also work at the Panera in Boone.

“I really like working at Panera,” Maness said. “It was my first job, and I have been really pleased.”

The owner of Panera in High Point will also own the Panera in Boone, Maness said.

Currently, Panera Bread has 939 locations across the United States and 150-160 new locations set to open in 2006, according to Panera’s Web site.

Panera will have both an entrance on the outside of Boone Mall and an entrance from the interior of the shopping center.

“We hope to see the opening of Panera Bread generate more business for the mall,” Boone Mall manager and marketing director Heidi J. Ellis said.

The owners of Boone Mall, H.L. Libby Corporation, chose Panera Bread, as well as other new stores, in order to bring more business.

New retail clothing stores such as Old Navy and Rue 21 recently opened in the mall.

“We think these new stores will bring a lot more college students to the mall than before,” Ellis said.

Old Navy opened Thursday and has provided around 70 jobs. Rue 21 opened the beginning of October.

“All of the new additions in the Boone Mall, including Panera Bread, are great opportunities,” Boone Chamber of Commerce President Dan F. Meyer said.

“The more retail stores and restaurants that come to Boone, the greater the variety, which is what we like to see in Boone,” Meyer said. “Plus, any new business will offer jobs for students. I’m sure that
Panera will probably provide great part-time employment opportunities.”
