Appalachian State University’s ultimate Frisbee club team, the Nomads, is coming off a strong outing last week at North Carolina State’s Wolfpack invitational.
The team went into the tournament facing national ranked William &
Mary University, Florida State University and Wake Forest University.
All three games were close, but ASU came up short in each contest.
“We did better at that tournament than I have ever seen us play
before,” sophomore club president Devin Donnelly said. “I think that we
are about to become a contender in North Carolina.”
The team will have another chance to prove itself this weekend as they
host the 10th annual Blue Ridge Blowout. Sixteen men’s teams and eight
women’s teams are expected to be in attendance.
“We got teams coming from all over; areas such as Asheville, Huntington
and the Raleigh area, all are very talented,” Donnelly said.
This year’s tournament will be one of the biggest ultimate Frisbee tournaments held in North Carolina.
“We are pretty excited about this year’s tournament,” Donnelly said. “I believe we will play very well.”
The club, which has been around for ten years, has grown in the last couple of years.
“We have grown and improved in some many ways in my four years of being
here from skill-wise to team play,” senior offense captain Ben Caviness
said.
“The heart of the team is the biggest improvement I have notice this
year. Players are more dedicated and the team spirit is so high,” he
said.
With many young players on this year’s squad, the added depth is a huge asset to the team.
“Our younger players have been a huge factor to the team this year,
they got the basics down of catching and throwing and that’s what makes
or breaks a team,” Caviness said.
