Volleyball team sweeps Greensboro by KATIE ANN HENDERSON Sports Reporter
The Appalachian State University volleyball team captured its eighth home win Saturday against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a 3-0 sweep (30-24, 30-19, 30-28).
With the win, the Mountaineers completed their regular home season and sent off three seniors.
The Spartans were held to a .075 hitting percentage, while ASU hit at .254 mark and had 11 blocks.
Senior Chrissy Finch fell slightly short of a double-double, bringing
in 11 kills and eight digs for the Mountaineers. Finch also added two
solo blocks and a service ace.
Junior Dianna Thomas led offensively with 12 kills and a personal .647 hitting percentage.
Junior Brittany Zahn added 10 kills in the match.
Seniors Rachel Gates and Amy Lewis were honored for their leadership and success at Appalachian before the match.
Saturday’s win puts the Mountaineers at 12-2 in the Southern Conference.
The Mountaineers hit the road Friday, traveling to Spartanburg, S.C., to face Wofford College.
Women’s Cross Country
The Appalachian State University women’s cross-country team had three
runners place in the top five at the Southern Conference Cross Country
Championships Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Mountaineers slipped into second place with 44 points, losing by
one point to the hosting team, the University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga.
Graduate athlete Jenna Wrieden led ASU, coming in second place overall
with a 17.24 time on the 5,000m course. Mountaineer junior Meghan
Gaffney placed fourth with a time of 17:40 and senior Kasey Smith
placed fifth with a time of 17:42.
UTC senior Lanni Marchant captured her first SoCon Championship title with a time of 17:01.
The Mountaineers travel to Louisville, Ky. Nov. 11 in hopes of claiming the NCAA Regional Cross Country Championship.
