With exams slowly approaching and spring semester on its way, students will begin to notice changes at Belk Library & Information Commons.

Student Government Association Director of Academic Affairs Mang Chang, a senior social work major, has worked with university administrators to offer more library hours to students.

“The reason we are working on extending library hours is that there has been student concern raised about individuals being asked to leave when the library closed, when they still needed to use the facilities,” Chang said.

In regards to progress, we are halfway there, Chang said.

University Librarian Dr. Mary L. Reichel said extended library hours should expand to 24-hours, five days a week in both the Wired Scholar Cyber Café and the atrium.

“The tuition increases last year allowed for additional increases in library staff positions,” Reichel said.
A security guard will be hired to monitor the café and the atrium for student safety reasons.

Library officials are also beginning to prepare for the upcoming exam season.

The library will extend its hours as late as 2 a.m. for exams starting Reading Day, Dec. 6. Exam hours will end Dec. 13, the last day of exams.

Library staff received approval for converting two of the third-floor group study rooms into faculty offices.

The study rooms becoming offices are located on the north wall of the library, next to the instructional computing offices.

Reichel said these conversions provide space for two new Information Technology Services staff members.

To minimize the impact this will have on students, another room also located on the third floor will be converted into a group study room, Reichel said.

The library staff is also looking into purchasing more furniture to accommodate students.

Reichel said the library’s current projects will be in place and functioning by the time students return from Winter Break.
