It hasn’t quite reached “The Price is Right” status, but local game show “Sqrambled Scuares” will tape its 200th episode Thursday night.
There is a grand prize of $500 for the winner of the 200th episode.
Two contestants will be picked Thursday at 7 p.m. from the first 30 audience members who register to play.
The show will be taped at BZB Productions, located at 245-B Winkler’s Creek Road, across from AppalCART headquarters in Boone.
There will be free refreshments by Golden Corral and CiCi’s pizza for all who attend.
“Most television has very little to do with the community. ‘Sqrambled
Scuares’ was designed to be part of the community,” “Sqrambled Scuares”
host Buzz Berry said.
The show consists of two contestants each starting with 100 points. The
points are used to buy the letters and numbers to create a mixed-up
word.
The contestants then have to unscramble the letters before the other
player to receive the points and prizes earned during that round.
Prizes often come from local businesses and restaurants such as Mellow Mushroom and Joe’s Italian Kitchen.
The show’s contestants are all locals and many are Appalachian State University students.
“I was nervous about going on the show. I thought I was going to lose,”
Matthew J. Jennings, sophomore electronic media and broadcasting major,
said. “I wasn’t good at unscrambling the words.”
Sophomore public relations major Lauren E. Rosie said she got involved
with the show when one of her sorority sisters was a contestant and
invited friends to be in the audience.
“When you get there, you just drop your name and info in a box and they draw a name and they called me,” she said.
This may be the one and only 200th episode of “Sqrambled Scuares,” but
there have been many other unique episodes to precede it.
Themes such as Tweetsie Railroad, Mellow Mushroom and a father/son show are all hanging on the walls of BZB productions.
“We always have fun. it is all about having a good time during the show. I always want someone to win,” Berry said.
The show began in 1998 as a smaller version of what it is today.
“My wife and I feel very blessed and excited. We are proud and grateful
all at the same time that it was so well received in the community,”
Berry said.
The idea for the game show began with Berry’s experience in radio.
“People enjoyed winning prizes. It didn’t matter what it was, they just
liked winning, and people enjoyed listening to people win,” Berry said.
The 200th episode airs Monday on Charter Cable’s channel 14.
