Women’s club volleyball team sets high standards Print E-mail

Someone once said what you get out of something is equivalent to how much you put into it.

The women on Appalachian State University’s club volleyball team know this phrase all too well.

Playing in tournaments year-round, the club competes in the Southern Conference of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

Other schools within the division are East Carolina University, Duke University, Virginia Tech University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, James Madison University and others.

All teams go into spring-semester competition with the dream of jumping on a plane to Louisville, Ky., for the 2007 NIRSA Collegiate Volleyball Sport Club Championship in April.

The club volleyball team, in its 15th year, has qualified for nationals five times in a row heading into this semester.

The women at ASU believe they have an edge over the competition that will result in trip number six.
“I think we have a really good, talented team and I think we’ll go far in our spring semester and tournaments,” senior outside hitter Ashley Stankwytch said. “We definitely have a lot more talent this year than we did last year. We have a lot of good freshman that came in.”

One of those freshmen is Courtney Broere, one of the team’s liberos, which is a defensive specialist.
Broere also expects big things from the team this semester.

“Every girl goes into every practice with a focused mind set, none of us really goof off,” Broere said, “I feel confident in every single player.”

Meredith Sink, the team’s president and middle hitter, attributes success to the team’s camaraderie as well as practice.

“I feel really good right now. I feel like we’ve had a lot of intensity at our practices so far and that everybody is giving their all, and we’re coming together more as a team,” she said. “I feel like we are all a bunch of sisters and are kind of like a family together.”

One of the cornerstones of women’s club volleyball has always been new talent.

Any person who is interested is encouraged to try out, regardless of skill or experience.
