Boone weather is a fickle thing. No two days are alike – no two hours are even alike. Temperatures have been known to fluctuate 30 degrees in one day.  How can anyone be expected to dress in a stylish way that also serves the purpose of keeping up with the weather?

One word: layers.

Up Top

Outerwear

The walk from the car to the office or classroom in the morning can take someone through ice, wind and snow. In the afternoon that same person might be greeted with sunshine.

The key here is the multi-layer winter parka.

Fashionable coats such as the Juniper Basin Jacket allows comfort for the wearer whether they are shredding the slopes or running errands.

The drawstring center and princess cut seams keep the wearer from looking like a stuffed animal from the county fair.

Shirts/Sweaters

No one knows when Dr. Coldnature will crank up that heat and leave you roasting in your cubical or classroom.

Grab a sweater, a standard “perfect fit” T-shirt and a matching scarf.

Make sure these things fit well. A sweater should always leave enough room for a T-shirt or a camisole to be worn under it.

However, don’t leave enough room to wear your parka under it. Nothing is better at ruining your look than oversized sweaters.

Don’t be afraid to throw in some accessories either.

Every fashion magazine on the shelf is obsessed with the waist-clincher belt. Try it in metallic or animal prints because those are big right now, too.

If you are wearing animal prints, be consistent. Zoos don’t put leopards and zebras together for more than one reason.

Down Low

Jeans/Pants

Here’s my tip for you: get rid of your ‘reliable/fat jeans’ and those jeans that you need to lose ‘just 5 pounds’ for. Just get something that fits!

Jeans should be long enough to be worn with a pair of heals and short enough to be worn with flats without dragging bottom.

Never get pants that are so tight you can’t pinch the material on your legs.

Also, if your jeans are creating your pudgy belly to roll over the top of it and give you a “muffin top” – just say no.

No store or brand is really better than any other for jeans. If they fit well, no one is going to look at you any different.

Skirts

You absolutely can wear your favorite skirts in the winter.

If they are winter colors, (this year think navy, plumbs and browns) and at least knee length, all you’ll need to do is grab a pair of tights and knock yourself out.

Also, don’t wear your grandmother’s thick tights. Get some in different colors or embroidered ones.

Shoes

If your feet hurt – that’s not practical footwear.

Living in the High Country doesn’t allow you to buy Nine West simply because they’re so cute. Be sensible or you will pay for it on down the line.

Take your four-inch heels back to Charlotte or Raleigh because that’s the only place you’ll wear them.
Get a few good pairs of flats. Any retail store is going to have sensible flats that are adorable.

This year’s trend is to make your shoes noticeable. Be brave: grab a red pair or even a zebra print.

In Boone, you can get away with ugly shoes. Birkenstock and Crocs are not going to win you any fashion awards, but no one will laugh at you either. The only ugly shoes I would steer clear of are Uggz – even if they are warm – especially avoid them if you wear a mini skirt.
