Step, yoga, pilates, kickboxing, spin?

Beginning this week, University Recreation added a new genre to its list of fitness classes after the purchase of 15 StarTrac NXT spin bikes.

Heather S. Atwell, a junior English secondary education major, leads the new super spin class in the Mount Mitchell Life Fitness Center aerobics room Mondays at 1:15 p.m.  The full schedule of the new spin classes is available online at www.urec.appstate.edu.

All spin classes will be held at Mount Mitchell Life Fitness Centre in Plemmons Student Union.

Kirstin L. Blanchard, a fitness programmer for UREC, said spin classes are “high cardio, really fun and a really good workout.”

UREC offers three different classes, spin and sculpt, super spin and Tour de France with Lance.

Spin and sculpt is an hour-long class, split evenly between cardio riding and strength training, while super spin is a 45-minute interval class.

Blanchard said Tour de France with Lance is the most challenging class, as it is one full hour of riding.

“[Tour de France with Lance] is a high-cardio class that requires the most endurance,” Blanchard said.

Blanchard recommends spin and sculpt as the best class for beginners, since it only involves 30 minutes of riding.

Blanchard said all classes can be performed at your own pace.

While all classes will vary depending on instructor, riders can start at their own level and choose to increase the bike’s resistance or continue at the same pace.

UREC Director Joe R. Carter said there has been interest in providing spin classes for years, but the quality of the bikes was not what it is today.

“Some of the bikes [of a few years ago] were only six months old, but looked like they were two years old,” Carter said.

Carter said he was impressed with the durability of this brand, as well as the versatility it would offer to students.

“[With] the improvements that have been made, it seems like a worthwhile purchase at this time,” Carter said.

Carter said most of the instructors are existing staff members who have been trained to lead the classes in addition to a few students who are certified spin instructors.

StarTrac NXT has provided training to instructors and plans to return to provide additional training in April.

The new schedule of classes includes 20 spin classes per week.

Due to the limited number of bikes, Blanchard recommends that participants arrive at least 10 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin.

A full schedule of classes can be found at each UREC facility and online at www.urec.appstate.edu.
