The Appalachian celebrates Black History Month by honoring blacks at Appalachian who helped break down the race barrier.
Dr. Thalia Coleman Compiled by Jamison Doran
Dr. Thalia Coleman, a professor of language, was the first black woman to be granted tenure at Appalachian.
She was the first person from her family to graduate from college. She
graduated from the University of South Carolina where she earned her
degree in speech correction.
After finishing her undergraduate work, she earned her master’s degree
in speech pathology from Pennsylvania State. She went on to earn her
doctorate from the University of Florida in communication processes and
disorders.
Coleman came to Appalachian to help create department grants to increase the number of black students in her field of study.
Coleman was awarded “Mentor of the Year” twice, and she was awarded as an “Outstanding Teacher.”
Coleman said her biggest sense of accomplishment was helping students with difficulties who are now doing well.
