The eighth annual Lewis L. Mack Alumni Day took place Monday in Thelma C. Raley Hall.

Alumni day was founded in memory of well-known alumnus Lewis L. Mack.

“This day is an opportunity for students to connect with the alumni and is a great networking opportunity,” Heidi A. Williams, director of career services for Walker College of Business, said.

The alumni that were invited to this event ranged from all aspects of the workforce. This year there were over 40 alumni present.

“Many alumni come back for career day to get involved again and to possibly give something back to Appalachian,” Steve Bostian, alumnus and CEO of Smart Choice, said.

Joseph Nelis, from Konica Minolta, discusses sales management on a panel at the Business Alumni Day held Friday from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. in Raley Hall.

Alumni offer classes based on their careers and then are matched up with specific classes at Appalachian State University.

The classes are set up so alumni are more like guest speakers than special event guests.

Students attended their normal classes and the alumni talked about their careers and what they have to do with specific majors and courses.

The alumni day provides a small classroom-like atmosphere that allows students to fully understand what certain careers are like and to ask as many questions as possible.

These classes are an opportunity for alumni to give advice to students that they would not otherwise be able to give.

“Really take time to treasure Appalachian State,” Monisha Primlani, alumna and director of government relations for Electric Industries Alliance, said. “It is a really special place and the rest of the world is not like Boone. During times that have been stressful, I always think back to Boone. I pull strength from it.”

Alumni day is a unique experience in which all students are invited.

“I wish we had an event like this when we were here. It is good to hear a graduate’s story,” Bostian said.

The chance to talk to an experienced alumni who has made their way out in the business world is a great opportunity to further a student’s learning experience, Dr. Randy Edwards, dean of Walker College of Business, said.

“This event is a great way to help students broaden their network and to understand the real world,” Edwards said.
