There will be one ticket in this year’s Student Government Association presidential election, comprised of current President Forrest S. Gilliam and vice presidential running mate Will D. Windley.

The solo ticket resulted after David C. Humphrey and Jonathan W. Hodges removed themselves from the race.

“I don’t have the patience for the process that’s really necessary,” Humphrey said. “I can still do the work I want to do without any title.”

Gilliam looks forward to next year as an opportunity to continue plans from the past year.

“We have a good opportunity to continue with things that are more long term. A lot of our goals were huge, and we knew we wouldn’t get them all done. Now we can,” Gilliam said.

Windley currently serves as SGA treasurer.

“Being treasurer, I already learned a lot in time management. As vice president, I know I will be in the office a lot more, but I feel prepared,” Windley said.

Although they are now the sole ticket, the Gilliam-Windley campaign has not changed, Gilliam said.

“Our goals haven’t changed. We have signs and a Web site that are still on track. The approach is modified,” Gilliam said.

One possible obstacle Gilliam admits he may face is being too content during his second year in office.

“I don’t see myself getting burned out. I love this. I have the risk of getting too comfortable,” Gilliam said.

At a forum Tuesday, representatives from the Black Student Association, Greek life, Sexuality And Gender Alliance, WASU and The Appalachian sat on panel to ask questions of candidates.

Some of the pending issues included diversity, equality and SGA relationship with campus organizations.

Gilliam and Windley cited goals such as having SGA members attend multicultural club meetings, build relationships with student media and promote a positive image of campus sororities and fraternities.

Some goals from the Gilliam-Baker office were not fully accomplished this year, Gilliam said.

These issues, including town-university relations and AppalCART improvements, will continue to receive focus in the upcoming year.

Voting is on AppalNet March 26-29 along with a vote for the Renewable Energy Initiative (REI) fee renewal, said SGA Vice President Whitney E. Baker.
