Dedication and hard work are two things that can help improve any team.
The Appalachian State University club lacrosse team strives to be an example of that.
This year, the team currently ranks 25th out of 95 teams in the nation and are one of top teams in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference of collegiate club lacrosse.
“This year’s team is very talented and a lot more driven,” junior team
president Adam Moses said. “We have a lot of talent from the last three
years. Most of them are seniors.”
The team has seen its share of success before, reaching the conference
championship the last two years but coming up short each year.
“We have great leaders on the field,” Moses said. “We have a goal of
doing our best to win every game and working hard to get to Dallas for
the nationals.”
This year’s team has a fair share of veterans and talented young players, and the combination has been rewarding.
“We are a collective group,” senior head coach Joel Altman said. “We
have been improving our practices and game play so that we are a threat
to any team we play.”
The Mountaineers have been more than a threat to many teams, such as a win over Wake Forest University early in the season.
“We are a strong team this year,” Altman said. “And we have a great chance of winning the conference tournament in Atlanta.”
However, before they set their sights on Atlanta, the Mountaineers have some work in front of them.
They face many of the top schools from around the area such as University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Furman University.
The tough competition is not worrying them.
“We have a few team leaders who have been scouting other teams,” Altman
said. “So we can have a better understanding of how to shut them down.”
Filled with players who have collegiate experience from playing at
other schools, the team believes it has provided an extra spark and
made each player better.
“There are a lot of transfers from other Division II and III schools,”
senior Kevin Wang said. “We also have some former high school
All-Americans as well. It’s a great combination we have.”
The next test ASU will face will be Friday when the team travels to Furman.
“We have a lot of talent this year and a lot of great leaders to lead
this team,” Moses said. “And for these seniors, it’s the last chance
for them to make it to nationals.”
