Forrest S. Gilliam will return as president of Student Government Association next fall with Will D. Windley as vice president.

Although the ticket was unopposed, 1,070 students voted in last week’s election.

Gilliam and Windley already have big plans for next year’s time in office.

Two important issues, student football tickets and tuition and fees, will receive much attention.

“We’re going to be working on the game tickets. It’s something we ran into some last year with [North Carolina] State. This year we have [Michigan]. We’re trying to set up a procedure where students still pay for those tickets but have first chance to buy them,” Gilliam said.

Windley explained there were several ways to accomplish results with football ticket issues.

“With the football tickets, we’re trying to make sure at least half of the tickets are reserved for students,” Windley said.

“Hopefully we can write some legislation in senate to reinforce this,” he said.

Tuition and fees will also receive attention from SGA in the coming year.

Gilliam said he hopes to acquire more student feedback as a way to find out the best options for tuition and fees.

With experience this year as SGA treasurer, Windley feels he will be able to work directly with this issue.

“With 59 percent of students at Appalachian on financial aid, we want to increase aid for those students,” Windley said.

Also up for voting last week was the referendum for the Renewable Energy Initiative.

The REI renewal passed overwhelmingly in a 1,258-94 vote.

This means students will continue to pay a $5 fee in their tuition that will to go toward sustainable development on the Appalachian State University campus.
