A search for a new vice chancellor for University Advancement is underway at Appalachian State University.
Jerry L. Hutchens is the current interim vice chancellor for University Advancement.
The division of University Advancement at Appalachian “incorporates the
offices of: Alumni Affairs, Public and Cultural Affairs, Development
(including Advancement services and the Appalachian Fund) and the
Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc., according to
give.appstate.edu.
“Every part of the campus is touched by advancement,” Cindy A. Wallace, vice chancellor for Student Development, said.
Several facets of University Advancement include raising external money
to meet campus needs, maintaining the “face” of the university, and
planned giving coupled with the [Appalachian] Alumni Association, she
said.
For the search, Appalachian decided to draw the help of an outside firm.
“The search committee made a decision to either hire an external search
firm or do it themselves. They hired a group specializing in
advancement and higher education,” Wallace said.
Witt/Kieffer, a search firm out of Chicago, was hired by Appalachian for the search.
“We are the nation’s largest and most experienced search firm that
specializes in the education and not-for-profit sectors,” according to
wittkieffer.com. “We assist colleges, universities … and other
not-for-profit organizations with senior administrative search
engagements.”
Wallace said Appalachian felt this firm would help bring the best talent to campus.
According to wittkieffer.com, “Appalachian seeks an accomplished and
creative professional to lead it to a new level of fund-raising
success.”
Walker College of Business Dean Dr. Randy Edwards heads the search committee.
“Chancellor [Kenneth E.] Peacock appointed a 17-member search committee
and then he gave us the option of hiring a national firm,” Edwards said.
His committee met with six candidates in Charlotte three weeks ago.
“The common term for these interviews is airport interviews,” Edwards
said. “The six people who came flew into Charlotte and were interviewed
in a hotel nearby.”
Although there are now three final candidates, their names are not yet public.
“Those folks are currently at other positions and when a fundraiser
announces he or she’s looking for a new position, that creates problems
at their current institution,” Edwards said.
The interviewing process continues as candidates visit the campus this week.
“We hope to be able to recommend the new vice chancellor before commencement,” Edwards said.
Peacock will make the ultimate decision of who to hire.
