After 23 years of service, Dr. Mark Estepp, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, will leave his position at Appalachian State University.
He plans to enter the next phase of his career as the second president of Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Va. He succeeds Dr. Charles King, who recently retired after serving as president since the college was started in 1967.
Estepp
joined Appalachian in 1984 as an assistant professor in industrial
education and technology. He chaired the department of technology for
11 years before serving as dean in 2003.
Provost Stan Aeschleman said he will miss his colleague and friend.
“Mark has provided visionary leadership in his role as dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts,” Aeschleman said.
Estepp said it
is more likely but not necessary for an interim dean to be selected
from within the university to fill the role he is leaving behind.
Before serving as dean, Estepp was interim dean for one year.
“From my
experience, this transition involves a steep learning curve, but it
will be a smooth transition for the university because of the talented
people here,” he said.
Estepp said
interviews will soon be conducted, and the interim dean will be
announced before his departure, which is scheduled for July 1.
“On behalf of
everyone who has worked with Mark the 23 years he has been at
Appalachian, we thank him for his many outstanding contributions and
extend best wishes in his new position,” Aeschleman said.
