The new vice chancellor for University Advancement was named June 29, allowing Jerry L. Hutchens an opportunity to step down from the interim position he has held for the last three years.
Susan H. Pettyjohn, currently the associate vice president for university development at The College of William and Mary, and a Western North Carolina native, will take over the position on Sept. 4.
Appalachian
began the search for a new vice chancellor for University Advancement
about a year ago, Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock said.
“Jerry Hutchens knew the Appalachian family and was ready to take on
the position and stay during those transitional years” he said.
Pettyjohn said she learned about the position from the search committee.
“[The interviews were] wonderful” she said. “I really appreciated the
openness of the university during the search process. You have a sense
that you know the people you are going to work with, and that really
helps with the decision making process.”
The position will allow Pettyjohn to work with multiple areas of development including both alumni relations, cultural affairs.
“It’s a big responsibility,” Peacock said. “I was very impressed with her professionalism and her experience.”
He said, “William and Mary is most a most impressive university and her
experience at that level at an institution that is well respected
certainly caught my attention.”
Pettyjohn agreed that her position at William and Mary prepared her for her Appalachian endeavor.
“All of the development responsibilities I’ve had while in this position have helped me the most” she said.
Pettyjohn received her Masters in Higher Education Administration from The College William and Mary.
Pettyjohn, who lived outside of Hickory, said, “I grew up just down the
mountain so a lot of my friends went to school [at Appalachian]. My
step daughter is an App alumni and I have been on campus many times.”
“She’s familiar with the area and I think she understands the people”
Peacock said. “She will relate well with our donors and I think because
of her experience at William and Mary she will be able to find us new
donors and be able to open new doors.”
“The reason I do what I do is to help make a difference for students”
Pettyjohn said. “I’m hopeful I’ll be able to make a difference there.”
