Dr. Glenda Treadaway was recently appointed by Provost Stan Aeschelman as the interim dean of theCollege of Fine and Applied Arts.
Treadaway replaces Dr. Mark Estepp, who left the position to serve as president of Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Va.
“I
have always wanted to do what I can so that students are getting the
best education through the best possible means. My goal is to make
Appalachian State University No. 1,” Treadaway said.
Aeschelman said the selection process was short because there was
little time to fill the interim dean position as Estepp began his new
job July 1. All the chairs in the College of Fine and Applied Arts were
asked to submit nominations.
“I feel very qualified for the position but I also know that the other chairs were very qualified as well,” Treadaway said.
“I was looking for someone who knew the college, had proven
administrative expertise, and could lead the college during a period of
collegiate reorganization,” Aeschelman said.
“Based upon my own personal experience working with Dr. Treadaway, I am
very confident that she will do an excellent job in leading the
college,” he said.
For two years, Treadaway has chaired the communication department, which is housed in the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
Her appointment as interim dean made it necessary to fill her old position within the college.
Before his departure, Estepp selected Dr. Janice T. Pope as interim chairwoman of the communication department.
“I would not have accepted this position if I did not feel confident in
[Pope’s] ability to take good care of the communication department,”
Treadaway said.
Pope
previously served as the department’s assistant chairwoman. After
acting as the interim chair for about a week, she said her workload has
doubled.
“We have a lot of exciting things going on [in the department],” Pope said.
Along with supporting Treadaway’s efforts, Pope said she will continue one of her own fulfilling goals.
“I enjoy keeping in touch with young alumni and building the alumni base,” Pope said.
Dr. Carl H. Tyrie has been appointed to step in as the Communication department’s assistant chairman.
Aeschelman said the new positions will remain until a national search is conducted in order to find a permanent dean.
