Summer Exhibition Celebration
As
part of the evening’s celebration, An Appalachian Summer Festival and
the Turchin Center welcomed Leilani Chan and Ova Saopeng of TeAda
Productions for a performance of their new work “Refugee Nation.” TeAda
exists to enrich the repertoire of contemporary works created and
performed by people of color.
Shen Wei Dance Arts
Shen Wei Dance
Arts is based on the art forms: dance, theater, Chinese opera,
painting, sculpture and blends Western and Eastern cultures. The
company was established at the American Dance Festival in 2000. Since
its inception, the company has performed throughout the United States
and internationally. Shen Wei Dance Arts performed its celebrated “Rite
of Spring” at “An Appalachian Summer Festival.”
 Active Image | Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra
The Eastern
Philharmonic Orchestra is the faculty ensemble of the Eastern Music
Festival in Greensboro and has been established for 46 years. The
orchestra is comprised of musicians selected from leading symphony
orchestras and faculty of music schools across the nation, who also
serve on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival’s training program
for young musicians.
Silent Auction
Sponsored by
Peabody’s Beer & Wine Merchants, the auction will feature a
selection of unique products and services, including restaurant and
hotel getaways, golf outings and spa packages, handcrafted ceramics,
original artwork and tickets to area attractions. The auction will end
after intermission during the performance by the Eastern Philharmonic
Orchestra on Sunday, July 22, and auction items may be picked up at
this time. Pre-registration is required in order to bid.
Figure Drawing Workshop
Appalachian
State University faculty member and renowned artist Tim Ford teaches a
weeklong workshop focused on drawing the figure from life. Participants
will be led through a series of drawing exercises designed to
strengthen familiarity with the figure, and increase technique. Initial
studies focus on traditional drawing media, but advanced studies allow
the introduction of additional media. This is open for participants
with skills from beginner to advance.
Broyhill Chamber Ensemble
The Broyhill
Chamber Ensemble is an association of internationally acclaimed
musicians. The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble performed Beethoven’s String
Trio in D Major, Op. 9 No. 2, Penderecki’s String Trio and Brahms’
Piano quartet in g minor.
Performing
Friedrich Kuhlau’s “Grand Trio in G, Op. 119”, Max Reger’s “Serenade
for Flute, Violin and Viola in G, Op. 141a”, Sofia Gubaidulina’s
“Sounds of the Forest”, Béla Bartók’s “Duets for Two Violins”, the
Händel-Halvorsen “Passacaglia for violin and cello” and Antonin
Dvorák’s “Piano quartet in E-flat, Op. 87”.

Celebrating New Orleans with Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis and Friends
Ellis Marsalis
is regarded as the premier modern jazz pianist in New Orleans.Ellis is
also a jazz teacherto students such as pianist and vocalist Harry
Connick, Jr., trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Nicholas
Payton, Kent and Marlon Jordan and Steve Masakowski and, his four sons,
among many others.
Delfeayo
Marsalis, trombonist, is currently working on concerts with the
Minnesota Orchestra for the 2007-08 season. The first concert on June
28 featured octet arrangements of the Ellington classic “Such Sweet
Thunder”, based upon the literary style of William Shakespeare.
Mark Morris Dance Group
The Mark Morris
Dance Group was formed in 1980. The company’s touring schedule steadily
expanded to include cities both in the U.S. and in Europe. The company
returned to the United States in 1991 as one of the world’s leading
dance companies, performing across the U.S. and at major international
festivals. The company’s performance at “An Appalachian Summer
Festival” will include the four works, “The Argument”, “Sang-Froid”,”
Italian Concerto” and “Grand Duo”, all choreographed by Mark Morris.

The second of
the three year series, Appalachia and the World, this summer’s seminar
is titled “A Day With Some of Appalachian’s Rock Stars”, and features
sessions with current and retired faculty of Appalachian’s Department
of Geology.
Rapunzel: Appalachian Young People’s Theater Family Matinee
Founded in 1972
as a dynamic component of Appalachian State University’s Department of
Theatre & Dance, the Appalachian Young People’s Theatre works
alongside communities and public schools of Northwestern North Carolina
to bring live theatre experiences to young audiences who otherwise
experience little or no theatre. In 1996, the North Carolina Theatre
Conference presented the Constance Welsh Award to the company for
excellence in theatre for youth.
Glass Beads
A weeklong
workshop taught by a glass bead artist with more than 10 years of
experience. Lessons will focus on safety, the chemistry of glass bead
work, proper use of supplies and materials and techniques for
decorating beads. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will
have made enough beads to make their own jewelry and the information
necessary to start a studio in their home if desired.
Lunch & Learn: Joseph Patrick
Joseph Patrick
retired from a teaching career in 2003 with his most recent appointment
being the art faculty of the University of Iowa.
The Lunch and
Learn series allows community members to gather together, they are
provided a bag lunch and learn more about work in the current
exhibitions or related subjects. This event is free.
The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music, Dance
“The Mystical
Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music, Sacred Dance” comprises nine pieces
believed to generate energies conducive to world healing. The Loseling
monks perform ancient temple music and dance for world healing.
The Loseling
monks are endorsed by the Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world
peace and healing through sacred performing art. On previous tours the
monks have shared the stage with artists as varied as Philip Glass,
Kitaro, Paul Simon, Sheryl Crow, Michael Stipe, Patti Smith, Natalie
Merchant, the Beastie Boys and many others.
