Returning Appalachian State University students will have at least one change to adapt to this year - the use of a Banner ID number instead of Social Security numbers for student identification.
The Banner ID is a nine-digit number, the same amount as a Social Security number. However, the Banner ID number is a completely random sequence of numbers.
The first number of each Banner ID is always nine.
“You can easily find your Banner ID number off your AppalNET account,”
Michael S. O’Hara said. O’Hara is a junior history major and an
employee of the circulation department at Belk Library.
Students can find their ID by logging into their AppalNET account,
clicking on the Self Service tab, and clicking on the link under the
heading “Personal Information.”
Switching over from Social Security numbers to the new Banner ID system began March 19.
North Carolina passed a law banning the use of Social Security numbers
as identifiers for students at the university starting July 1.
Don R. Rankins, university registrar, said the Social Security number
can only be used for legal purposes, such as financial aid or payroll.
Rankins said he hopes the university can determine a way that students
will never have to use their Banner ID so that it does not have to
become a necessary “memorized number.”
