The Town of Boone will elect a new mayor and three new council members come October.
There are two candidates for the position of mayor and nine for the three available council seats. The town council elections are held once every two years.
The
mayor will serve a term of four years along with the two top voted
candidates for town council, while the third candidate will serve a
term of two years.
“This means there will always be three council seats open during the elections,” said Glenda Jackson, program assistant.
The towns of Blowing Rock and Beech Mountain are also holding town council elections this year.
Blowing Rock and Beech Mountain will hold their elections on Nov. 6.
“The polling stations are distributed according to your district.” Jackson said.
Some of these polling stations include Farthing Auditorium, the Watauga
County administration building, Watauga High school and the National
Guard Armory.
An Appalachian State University student is also running in this election.
Ethan Dodson, a second year graduate student, is running for a seat on the town council.
“I have always been interested in the town council and I had a lot of encouragement from friends,” Dodson said.
“I was nervous when I first submitted the application but I’m not now.
I’m just excited about it. I might be nervous if I get elected but not
now,” Dodson said.
Dodson hopes to bring a student perspective to the council.
“I feel like the town of Boone has neglected its students. The students
are a huge part of Boone and I want them to be involved,” Dodson said.
Dodson hopes his Watauga County roots will win him some clout with the public.
“I was born here and have lived here for about ten years so I’m not
just a student coming in and deciding, hey I want to run for town
council. I grew up here,” Dodson said.
There are 11 total candidates for the upcoming election.
The Appalachian will be following the elections by running a profile on
each of the candidates as the elections draw closer. Each profile will
focus on the individual candidate and their campaign.
Further coverage of the Boone election will be available in coming issues of The Appalachian.
