It’s that time again. Time for the weather to start cooling off, time for the new seasons of shows to begin, and yes, time for a new school year.
One thing that Appalachian State University students can look forward to is another year of entertainment from Appalachian Popular Programming Society.
APPS
is responsible for bringing live entertainment and films to students
throughout the school year and this year will be no different.
“This year I expect attendance to be as amazing as it was last year.
Pretty much every council doubled their revenue and attendance goals,
and we’ll be bringing a lot of good shows.” Megan M. Sayre, president
of APPS, said.
APPS, a student run and operated organization, is made up of seven different councils.
The organization brings events to Legends, I.G. Greer Auditorium,
Plemmons Student Union, Farthing Auditorium, Holmes Convocation Center,
Greenbriar Theatre and Varsity Gymnasium.
The funding for this organization comes from student fees.
Council members are responsible for bringing entertainment they feel
the campus as a whole would enjoy at the best price available.
APPS starts off the year with activities that returning students will
be very familiar with and new students are likely to love as well.
On Aug. 17, an array of used carpets will be available for student’s
shopping pleasure in Legends parking Lot. This event takes place from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A cookout is planned on Duck Pond Field complete with a disc jockey.
This event takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and meal cards and cash
are accepted.
Keeping with tradition, “The Big Sale,” organized by Appalachian and
the Community Together, is on Aug. 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the
Legends parking lot.
This sale features various gently used home furnishings for dorm rooms
and apartments. The proceeds will go to benefit four local charities.
On Aug. 19, Carnival Night will be in Plemmons Student Union. Here
students can participate in games, hear live music, win prizes and shop
at the poster sale. The free event is from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Another Appalachian tradition is the outdoor movie. This year’s feature
is “Blades of Glory” on Aug. 21 on Duck Pond Field. The movie, starring
Jon Heder and Will Ferrell, will begin at 9 p.m. and last until
midnight.
This event is free and the rain location is I.G. Greer Auditorium.
On Aug. 22, Legends will have a $1 video dance party from 9 p.m. to midnight.
The Funky Monks, a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band, plan their first
Appalachian State performance for Aug. 23 in Legends. Doors open at 9
p.m. and tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door.
On Aug. 25, there is a DJ dance, featuring DJ Buttafingaz of Power 98
WPEG, in Legends from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $3 in advance and
$5 at the door.
In addition to the events planned for the first few days, APPS continues to organize events throughout the academic year.
Future performances also include Corey Smith, House of Fools, Perpetual
Groove, Toubab Krewe, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, the Rosebuds and
Sgt. Pepper Lives.
To get involved with APPS, students are welcome to attend brainstorming
meetings and suggest bands or other forms of entertainment to the
councils.
“We’re always interested in new members [and] in hearing new ideas.
Even if you’re not a member of APPS, you can stop by the APPS office
and let us know what you think,” Sayre said.
Students may also visit the APPS Web site at www.apps.appstate.edu and suggest programming.
The APPS office is located on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union.
“We’re going to have a lot of good entertainment, a lot of shows that the students actually want to see.
That’s why students are in charge of picking who comes, what films
we’re going to show, what bands come, what sponsored events we do on
campus,” Sayre said. “It’s run by students because it’s for students
and it’s the student’s money. That’s what APPS is all about and we’re
going to do that to the best of our abilities.”
