Note: This is the first in a series of articles profiling members of the community who are running for Boone Town Council or Mayor.
Liz Aycock, a candidate for Boone Town Council, feels that her educational background will help her impact the Boone community.
“As a graduate of [Appalachian State University] with a focus on appropriate technology, I feel as though I can really help to serve the community,” Aycock said.
Aycock is been active in Boone and wants to be able to expand her role in the community to help make important changes.
She currently serves on the Boone Planning Commission and is the Vice-Chair of Boone’s Affordable Housing Task Force.
Aycock describes herself as a very hard worker who loves working with people and who always finishes what she starts.
Aycock has two small children, one already in the public school system
and the other to join in a few years, and thus makes education an
important aspect of her campaign.
“I want to make sure that our young people have every educational opportunity available,” she said.
Aycock also wants to stress conservation in the Boone area to help keep it clean.
She would like to see incentives given for conservation of finite resources such as energy and clean water.
Aycock also wants to enhance downtown Boone and provide for more parks, recreation areas and green space.
Part of the enhancement would include encouraging visitors and
residents to use alternative transportation to help cut back on
pollution.
To go along with enhancing Boone, Aycock would like to see small businesses in Boone encouraged.
Small businesses in Boone are a vital part of our community and we must
make sure that we are able to help them thrive, she said.
Aycock would also like to see more affordable housing options in and around Boone.
“It is difficult for a family to be able to sustain living here with
housing costs what they are, I would like to see those costs decrease,”
Aycock said.
Aycock would like to see her major and minor put to good use as well.
With a specialization in solar, wind and hydroelectric energy and a minor in sustainable development
Aycock would like to put some of what she learned at Appalachian to use.
Sustainable development is extremely important and so is using
alternative resources to be able to keep Boone beautiful, she said.
Aycock hopes that the people of Boone elect her in October to a slot in Town Council.
“It is something that I really want and I feel that I can really help to serve Boone,” she said.
