It’s the beginning of the school year, which means the start of a new performance season. Appalachian State University’s department of theatre and dance will hold auditions for the fall 2007 season of programs in the upcoming weeks.

Currently, the fall schedule includes four theatre performances and two dance performances.

These include “This is Not a Pipe Dream” by Barry Kornhauser, “Freshman Showcase,” the North Carolina Dance Festival, the North Carolina Dance Alliance, “The Waiting Room” by Lisa Loomer, and the Playcrafters New Play Festival.

Derek P. Gagnier is expecting between 75 to 100 students to audition for performances this season.

Gagnier is the performance coordinator for the department of theatre and dance.

Some of the performances, including “This is Not a Pipe Dream,” have a limited number of parts available.

Others, however, particularly dance-centered shows, can consist of many students, Gagnier said.

According to the department’s Web site, dance auditions for fall 2007 will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the varsity studio 203 and Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the varsity studio 208.

Freshman Showcase auditions will be held Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Valborg Theatre. These auditions are open to freshmen only, according to the Web site.

Auditions begin with an audition workshop Tuesday and will continue through Aug. 31.

There will be auditions held in October and November for additional performances, Gagneir said.

“This is Not a Pipe Dream” will be the first performance of the season.

Director of the show Teresa E. Lee said she was looking for six students who have experience with movement and demonstrate high energy.

Lee said that the play is based on the childhood dreams of the surrealist painter Rene Margritte.

“The play was written for young audiences but it has a wide appeal,” Lee said.

Students from surrounding schools will visit Appalachian to watch the play.

The department is working in conjunction with the Turchin Center for Visual Arts to develop and continue discussion on the life and work of Rene Magritte.

In addition, Lee said the play is a mix between Keystone Cops and Cirque de Soleil with it’s high energy and fast pace.

“This is Not a Pipe Dream” will be performed Oct. 3-Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. in Valborg Theatre.
