For the first few weeks of every semester, the University Bookstore is one of the busiest places on Appalachian State University's campus.
Hundreds of students wait each day to pick up their rental textbooks in the line that often snakes around the entire upper level of the bookstore.

The sophomore pre-professional biology major said she always picks up
her books on the first day and "usually within the first hour."
"The lines were great," Morris said. "I got through them in ten minutes."
Getting her books early was especially important this year because the first day of book pick-up was also freshmen move-in day.
This way, she could get her books ahead of the freshmen, she said.
With her books picked up early, Morris likes to start reading ahead for her classes.
"I like to be prepared," she said. "I find that the longer you take
getting your books, the more difficult your semester is going to be.”

Morris recommends freshmen pick up their books early when spring semester rolls
around.
While students like Morris begin their semesters early, others chose to wait out the lines.
Stephanie L. Bell, junior sociology major, often finds herself running
to the bookstore minutes before her first assignment is due in one of
her courses.
"I'm really grateful for the rental system," she said. "But I don't want to spend more time in the bookstore than I have to."
Bell said as an underclassman she would pick up her books early, but has since learned from experience.
"Some of my classes don't require that we have the books right away and
I always change my schedule," she said. "The classes I have on Friday
are never the classes I had on Monday. It's just easier to wait until later."
While not having her books immediately may put her a little behind in a
few of her classes, Bell said playing "catch-up" is still better than
having to wait in long lines.
"I've waited for an hour," she said. "I don't have time for that."
Students should be advised that this year they must print out their schedules instead of waiting for one
in their mailbox.
Students can pick up rental books during normal bookstore hours anytime during the semester.
