Note: This is the second in a series of articles profiling members of the community who are running for Boone Town Council or Mayor.

J. Ethan Dodson, a second year administration graduate student, is doing something that most people his age can only dream about. He’s running for office.

Dodson threw his hat into the ring at the end of the filing period after deciding it was the right thing to do.

“I was nervous at first but now I’m just excited about it,” Dodson said.

Dodson has been a resident of Watauga County for more than ten years and feels he can represent the community well.

One of the things Dodson would like to see changed if he were elected is the student voice around Boone.

Dodson feels that the Town of Boone has “neglected its students” and wants to make sure that the voices of students are heard throughout the community.

“The students are an important part of Boone and I want to make sure that I can voice their concerns to a governing body,” he said. “We need to strengthen that relationship.”

A new Political Action Committee has formed in Boone called Citizens for Change. Dodson was one of four candidates that this new PAC endorsed.

Dodson feels honored to have gotten support from the group but feels that the only real important endorsement is that of the Boone voters.

“The voters of Boone are the ones with the final say, and that’s the most important part to me,” Dodson said.

He wants more water conservation and would also like to expand the current storage capacity to provide for the growing Boone community.

Dodson would also like to see the Greenway trail expanded and wants to be able to provide for more green space and recreational areas for people.

He is also focused on making more affordable housing for Boone residents and students.

Dodson wants to establish nonpartisanship way of thinking and wants all members of the community to get involved.

“Now is the time for a results-oriented local government. It is my desire on being part of this important effort in order to capitalize on our wonderful opportunities.”
