Candidate wants town preservation |

Note: This is the fourth in a series of articles profiling members of the community who are running for Boone Town Council or Mayor.
For one Boone local running for town council, the preservation of downtown is key.
Kevin Freeman, who has lived here for most of his life and now works at Boone Saloon, is running a campaign that centers around the preservation of downtown Boone.
“I really want to keep Boone a nice place,” he said.
Freeman is not sure exactly when he had the idea to run for town
council but he knew that it would be a great way for him to have a say
in the town, especially after living in the area for years.
Freeman wants to center his attention on stopping big developments from
taking over, as well as keep the shops in the downtown area locally
owned and operated.
“It is important to support the local businesses and business owners in
Boone and make sure that they do not get overrun by larger developments
and corporations,” Freeman said.
Freeman would also like to make sure that Appalachian State University does not encroach on downtown Boone.
He also plans to make sure environmental issues are heard and taken care of as a part of his platform.
“I would like to see Boone more green and sustainable,” he said.
Freeman hopes to ensure that Boone has green space, which would include parks and recreation areas.
In addition, Freeman wants to keep Boone pure.
“We need to preserve the beauty of the mountains,” Freeman said.
Freeman would like to see fewer high rises in Boone and the surrounding
area to make sure that the beauty and integrity of the mountains are
preserved.
Freeman also stresses that residents be informed before voting.
“I’m not trying to ask for votes. I’m really just asking that voters be informed,” he said.
Freeman would like to see everyone who is eligible register to vote and
then vote for the person that they feel is the most qualified for the
job.
“Everyone needs to be informed and make sure they vote for someone who
shares their opinions and will let their voices be heard,” he said.
