Not every woman does it, and many women do not like talking about it, but the fact is every woman should have a check-up once a year.
Appalachian State University’s Student Health Services is now offering a women’s evening clinic for all female students.
“This has been something that we have been talking about doing for three years,” Vice Chancellor for Student Development Cindy A. Wallace said.
Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) Dr. Karen W. Goodman joined
Appalachian’s health services in August to allow Appalachian to offer
this service to female students.
“Dr. Geiger said that [at that time] health services could not meet the need,” Goodman said.
Goodman was previously at Eastern Carolina University for 5 years
working in student health, but her family had vacationed in Western
North Carolina many times and wanted to move.
“Things just fell into place when Dr. Geiger told me about the
position…we’ve been up here for about a month and we love it,” Goodman
said.
Currently the evening clinic offers female students an appointment
between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday for their annual
gynecological exam that includes a complete physical and Pap test.
Appointments for the clinic need to be made before health services closes at 4 p.m.
“We hope to be able to offer basic gynecological services in the near future for students,” Goodman said.
Health Services Processing Assistant Andrea N. Tester said on average they are currently booking
about 8 students every evening.
“I think it’s great. [The appointments] are getting picked up really
quick…it’s easier to do in the evening for students,” Tester said.
In the evenings, health services is closed with the exception of the services offered by Dr. Goodman
and her assisting nurse.
“It’s very private here in the evenings for female students, no
patients or other nurses walking around. I think that makes it less
uncomfortable,” Goodman said.
