Mountaineers dominate, crowd sets record numbers |

A
Kidd Brewer Stadium record 28,802 fans were not surprised when the
Appalachian State University football team savagely defeated
Lenoir-Rhyne College 48-7 Saturday.
“When
you have a 16,000 stadium and you have 28,000 plus in it, it says we
have great support from the community,” ASU head coach Jerry Moore
said. “I was taken aback. They were sitting on that chicken wagon.”
Senior
wide receiver Dexter Jackson’s two touchdown receptions, including a
59-yard catch and dash, put him all alone at fifth place on ASU’s
all-time touchdown reception list.
“Appalachian
is the real deal,” Lenoir-Rhyne head coach Fred Goldsmith said. “Speed,
speed, and more speed, that’s what makes them so good.”
Senior backup quarterback Trey Elder got the start and led the
Mountaineers to five touchdowns on their opening five possessions.
“It was really important how we started,” Moore said. “We wanted to establish ourselves and be authoritative.”
Elder took a lesson from sophomore starter Armanti Edwards, he said,
rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown. Also an efficient passer, he went
nine for 13 on his way to 210 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Edwards was in uniform, but he did not play in order to fully recuperate from last week’s game at University of Michigan.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s freshman quarterback Daniel Anderson was a
backup-turned-starter after sophomore Justin Sanders broke his hand in
the first quarter of their season’s opening game against Virginia Union
University.
Anderson was held to 80 passing yards in the game against ASU.
Freshman running back James Pone barely edged out Elder for the most rushing yards with 91.
“We went in thinking that we aren’t going to take Lenoir-Rhyne lightly and getting started early showed that,” Jackson said.
