Men’s soccer claims WKU Invitational
by ERIK RHYNE Sports Reporter
In its final game of the Western Kentucky Invitational, the Appalachian State University men’s soccer team played catch-up to claim the title.
Trailing 3-1 in the 82nd minute, the Mountaineers climbed back into the match to earn a draw against Butler University.
Appalachian got back in the game when junior Juan Obergon scored off a rebound from the foot of Antonio Harley to bring ASU within one.
The game-tying goal came in the last minute of the game as senior Sean Sassano crossed the ball to J.T. LaBruyere.
LaBruyere’s shot was partially blocked as senior Tim Bender picked up the rebound and kicked the ball across the goal line.
Butler out-shot Appalachian 25-17 in the contest.
For their play in the tournament, Sassano, Obergon, McCoy Livingston and Mark Weldon were named to the All-Tournament team.
ASU finished the invitational 1-1. Their win came against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Friday.
The Mountaineers came out of the tournament with a 2-1-1 record.
Men’s Basketball
Following last year’s record setting season, the men’s basketball team will see more exposure on television this year.
The Southern Conference announced Tuesday that Appalachian will have
two televised games as part of the 12-game deal the SoCon has with
SportSouth.
ASU set a new school record last season for conference wins with 25,
and claimed the outright North Division title for the first time since
the 1999-2000 season.
Appalachian also made its third ever appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.
Appalachian’s first game will tip-off the league’s television coverage
when the team travels to face Georgia Southern University Dec. 1.
The second game comes on Jan. 26 when the Mountaineers travel to face the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
This season will mark ASU’s first appearance on SportSouth.
Last season Appalachian was 5-3 in televised contests, including 2-0 against UTC.
The season kicks off Nov. 12 when Appalachian travels off the mountain to face the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
