Sledgehammer Charlie’s BY KATIE EASTER Intern Lifestyles Reporter
I have to admit, I didn’t really go here this week. But I have been here thousands of times.
The restaurant is Sledgehammer Charlie’s, which was originally located in my hometown of Lenoir.
Right now, it is in transition as the Lenoir location is closed and the Blowing Rock is waiting to open.
As the story goes, Charlie is from Lenoir, and he traveled around the world picking up recipes and looking for
something he couldn’t place.
When Charlie heard about his father’s death, he came back into Lenoir, and his only possession was the
sledgehammer his father had given him.
According to sledgehammercharlies.com, Charlie swore on his father’s grave that he would act out everything
he learned in flames.
No, he didn’t burn his belongings. He meant he was going to cook through flames.
According to the menu and sledgehammercharlies.com, his cookbook and journal was found in the very room of the Lenoir location.
It is with those recipes and flames that the chefs at Sledgehammer Charlie’s cook their food.
Considerably, this is not by any means the quickest way. I suggest that you let the wait staff know if you are in a
hurry.
The attraction of this restaurant is its atmosphere. In Lenoir, it was on the third floor of a building.
Yes, you had to take the stairs, but it was worth it when you made it to the top. As soon as you opened the door
you were somewhere else.
I am a vegetarian, but the smell of pull-pork over the fire lured you into the restaurant.
I almost wanted there to be a line, because the buzzers had games on it. I had almost mastered the trivia.
I want to reiterate that you should be prepared to wait. But it’s worth waiting for. There is everything from
‘sammys’ (sandwiches) to calzones that take up the entire plate.
My personal favorites are the ‘Kickin Queso’ for starters, ‘The Mean Athena’ if I am in the mood for a salad, the
‘Avo-ca-WHOA!’ if I am feeling a sandwich, and a make your own burrito if I am really hungry.
Now, if you are a meat lover, I am told that the pulled pork plate and the baby back ribs are to die for.
Another great thing about Charlie’s is that they really get involved in the community and they call in
entertainment on a regular basis.
The new Blowing Rock location may not be the same, but let’s hope it comes close.
