Note: This is the ninth in a series of articles profiling members of the community who are running for Boone Town Council or Mayor.

Mayor Loretta Clawson hopes the good times keep coming as she looks to be re-elected as mayor of Boone.

“It has been an absolute privilege to be able to serve this community that I love so much and I would love to continue,” she said.

Clawson has served two years as mayor and previous to that served six years as mayor pro-tem and also served on the Boone Town Council for eight years.

“I have a lot of experience in town government,” she said.

Clawson has several key issues that she hopes she can continue to address as mayor if she is re-elected.

One of her main priorities is the preservation of the town’s R-1 neighborhoods.

“We need to protect the integrity of our established neighborhoods,” Clawson said.

Something that goes along hand in hand with protecting established neighborhoods is creating more affordable housing in Boone, she said.

Clawson also wants to focus on green space in Boone.

“We need to expand our current green spaces, as well as promote new green space,” she said.

Clawson wants to see the expansion of the greenway and wants to see more places to walk, ride bikes and just enjoy the beauty of our community.

She would like to see a balance within the town that promotes both livability and balanced growth.

“Environmentalists and business owners both want the same things even if they may not exactly realize it…we all want Boone to be beautiful and be able to thrive,” Clawson said.

She would also like to see more and different forms of public transportation available to the community in order to help protect the environment and to reduce some of the traffic burdens.

“I think providing alternate forms of transportation to the community can help with the environmental impact of vehicles as well as help with traffic,” she said.

All in all Clawson believes that Boone has made huge strides while she has been mayor, but still thinks that more changes can be made.

“I believe the town has made huge progress and achieved wonderful things, but there is always still room to grow,” she said.
