Hundreds of scholarships are currently available and new ones are added every month as the number of students and costs of tuition increase.
Rita Clarice Hale Neal left $100,000 to Appalachian State University to set up a scholarship fund in the name of her stepson James Michael Neal.
This scholarship fund was developed to award one or more undergraduate students.
“The minimum amount [to start a scholarship fund] is $10,000. Obviously the amount of income that
amount can produce is much more than the normal,” Associate Vice Chancellor for Development David
C. Taylor said. “We will invest the assets to produce income for as long as Appalachian State
University is around. This amount can gain around $4,000 a year for scholarships,” Taylor said.
The mission of the financial aid office is to help students break down the financial wall and help
students pay for college.
“I don’t know how many scholarships are available for students. They are so decentralized and are
through the various departments,” Director of Student Financial Aid Esther Manogin said.
Scholarships are a way for students to pay for college.
“Many times scholarships are not renewable and students have to attempt to find new funding
resources,” Taylor said. “As students move on, scholarships are no longer available so students try to
find scholarships geared toward their majors.”
The process to set up a scholarship fund includes approaching a development officer to say they would
like to establish a scholarship fund.
“Then they make up a trust agreement, that would ensure that those funds would be used for that
specific purpose,” Taylor said.
Each scholarship fund has its own set of guidelines for what students should be considered and
awarded.
“An anonymous couple set up a scholarship fund whose guidelines were that the student who received
the scholarship should attempt to help the next generation by also setting up a scholarship once they
have started their career and have a little bit of extra money. I thought that was really cool,” Taylor
said. “I think that’s a pretty good idea to pay back the next generation if someone has helped you out.”
To find out about new scholarships, students can check with the dean of their college and with the
office of financial aid. Financial aid will also help with the specifics of applying for a scholarship.
“My advice to freshman is to apply [for the scholarship] by the university admission application
deadline,” Manogin said.
Manogin said the list of scholarships can be found on the financial aid Web site, in admissions
literature and on individual department Web sites.
The financial aid office can be reached at 262-2190.
The office located in John E. Thomas Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The
Web site is financialaid.appstate.edu.
