Promote a positive environment with ‘Go Green on Gameday’
The Appalachian wishes to applaud various movements dedicated to promoting going green and being environmentally friendly on campus.
Plemmons Student Union is taking steps to make the building more environmentally friendly.
A new initiative has already decreased the water pressure in bathrooms in the student union, as well as the water fountains.
This initiative will also provide for environmentally friendly cleaners to be used around the student union.
Another new initiative calling for fans to “Go Green on Gameday” will
also help to alleviate the environmental burden during tailgating.
Volunteers will literally dumpster dive to save recyclable items from landfills and will instead take them to be recycled.
While The Appalachian believes these are worthy causes and will make a
difference in the environmental impact of the university, we also feel
that some even smaller things can be done to help improve how green our
campus is.
The Appalachian would like to see more recycling stations on campus, especially in the residence halls.
The vending machines on campus supply drinks in plastic bottles, yet most of the recycling stations are for cans.
Something as simple as adding more plastic bins could make a huge difference.
The Appalachian also feels that while “Go Green on Gameday” is a great
idea, dumpster diving should not be necessary in order to save some
recyclables.
Instead, it makes more sense to supply enough recycling stations in tailgating areas for people to use.
While The Appalachian feels what is being done is a huge improvement, more could be done including some very simple solutions.
The Appalachian also urges students and visitors to our campus to make use of the recycling options available.
With a can in hand and two bins in front of you, it isn’t any harder to choose the recycling bin than the garbage can.
