Boost morale, support our team |

Unless you have been living under a rock other than “The Rock,” you know our Appalachian State University football team has now lost to Wofford College and Georgia Southern University this season.
Yes, that is disappointing.
But, let’s look on the positive side.
We beat the then No. 5 ranked team in the country – University of Michigan.
And we have won the last two I-AA National Championships. Not many schools are able to do that, especially back-to-back.
Home game attendance has increased tremendously and all of our games have even sold out.
So why has our school morale and football spirit gone down?
If it is because we have decreased our chance at a “three-peat,” then
we, as Appalachian Mountaineers, have some serious soul-searching to
do.
If it is because it is getting cold outside, get over it. This is Boone and it is not supposed to be warm.
If it is for some other reason, then it had better be good.
It’s true - most of us did not come here to play athletic events, or to have athletics as our No.1 priority.
But being a Mountaineer is about supporting your school in all aspects of education and athletic performance.
I am not saying you cannot be disappointed. That is your right.
I’m sure our football team wants to win their games; however, it looks
as though the other teams have simply wanted to win even more.
Both Wofford and Georgia Southern beat us, fair and square.
We love our football team when they are winning. We cannot do the same when they are losing?
So, take this for what it is: a challenge.
I challenge you to support our football team more than ever at the next home football game.
Do not boo the other team in order to boost our own confidence, but
welcome the opportunity to play another game and another team.
Students, do not throw bottles and other objects at another team’s
marching band, such as the behavior displayed to Georgia Southern’s
band this past weekend. That is pathetic.
We host other teams, so let’s act like it.
Take the win against Michigan, for example. When we beat them, talk
around campus was of how sportsman-like Michigan fans were to us. Why
can’t we do the same if we lose?
Take advantage of the fact that we don’t have to pay for our football tickets.
Support our Mountaineers.
Remember that a football program, especially one as thriving as ours, is a privilege.
This is an amazing time to be a student at Appalachian and we shouldn’t
forget that because of one unfortunate Black Saturday.
