Student voice equally important in town council runoff
Though the Town of Boone elections have seemingly lingered for months, they are nearing a very important end.
The runoff election between Boone Town Council candidates Liz Aycock and Dempsey Wilcox will take place Tuesday.
However, early voting, which includes North Carolina’s same-day voter registration, is happening until Saturday.
For those students who are not registered to vote in Watauga County, you still have the opportunity to participate in this election by going to the Board of Elections office located in the Courthouse before next week.
You
only need to bring proof of Watauga County residency, which would
include a water bill or an official residence hall statement, and a
photo ID, to register to vote.
The expression “every vote counts” has never been as true as it is now.
Following the first election Oct. 9, the tallying of 60 provisional ballots ended up deciding the election in Aycock’s favor.
However, the provisional ballots showed Aycock defeated Wilcox by only four votes in that election.
With such a close margin, students can truly make a difference.
Student-related issues like the prospective College of Education building and off-campus student housing should also peak students interest in participating in politics on a local level.
Important
decisions on these issues are likely to be made in upcoming years and
the last candidate elected to the town council will make a large impact
on these decisions.
The new same-day voter registration law allows everyone the opportunity to participate.
If
you didn’t vote the first time, you have another chance - and if you
don’t take it, you forfeit your chance for a say in the changes to
inevitably occur in Boone in coming years.
