Although the signatures are not on the dotted lines yet, residents on the west side of Appalachian State University’s campus will likely see some changes in the food options in Trivette Dining Hall starting fall 2008.
Director of Food Services Ron W. Dubberly said due to declining sales in Trivette Dining Hall’s TCBY in recent years, food services has been looking at ways to increase sales in the dining hall.
Dubberly said they decided to bring in a new McAlister’s Deli “Selects” where the current TCBY and Pizzeria are located.
“That area has got to have more sales to pay the bills,” he said.
Dubberly said TCBY sales have fallen in the last five years and due to
the request and popularity of McAlister’s Deli, they decided to bring
it to Trivette Dining Hall to increase sales.
“The change is not 100 percent yet. We don’t have the contracts signed, but more than likely it will happen,” he said.
Dubberly said after receiving feedback from students, the contracts will hopefully be signed in the next month.
Food Services supervisor Ronda J. Garland works at the Pizzeria and
TCBY and agreed that sales at the TCBY have been low and she thought it
was due in big part to the changes made by TCBY.
“We don’t have as big a variety as we used to. A few years ago, we had
up to 15 different flavors - now we have like eight or nine,” Garland
said. “And a lot of our old best sellers are gone.”
Dubberly said the Pizzeria will move to the new cafeteria once it is
completed but that TCBY will likely be phased out completely from
Appalachian.
“I think students will be upset because it takes away another food
option from this side of campus…this TCBY for on-campus students is
convenient and students can use their AppCards,” Garland said.
She said her main concern is the limiting of food options on the west
side of campus and the more expensive nature of McAlister’s Deli for
students.
Sophomore political science major Leah R. Henderson said she would
visit TCBY about once a week and liked the fact that it was open late.
“I mostly ate at Trivette [Dining Hall] because it was close and
convenient…I don’t think it’s cool that they’re moving it. Students
will be upset - it was a nice dessert break between studying,”
Henderson said.
Dubberly said the Pizzeria in Trivette Dining Hall will most likely replace Stone Willies Pizzeria in the new cafeteria.
“Since I’ve worked at the Pizzeria for the last four or five years
sales have gone up about 50 to 70 percent…the Pizzeria has really held
its own,” Garland said.
Dubberly said McAlister’s “Select” will offer both a counter order and
a take-out option. The menu will include about six to 10 of the most
popular items offered at the full McAlister’s Deli located in Plemmons
Student Union.
“They should start renovations in Trivette [Dining Hall] for the new
McAlister’s Deli over the summer of 2008 and be ready and open by fall
2008,” Dubberly said.
