Beef ‘O’ Brady’s brings the beef to Boone Print E-mail

“Where’s the beef?”

These words were once uttered by the infamous ladies of a popular Wendy’s commercial, and who would have thought the answer is right here in Boone.

A franchise of the family sports pub chain Beef ‘O’ Brady’s has opened in the Watauga Village shopping center near Wal-Mart.

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s was originally founded in 1985 in Brandon, Fla. by Ireland native Jim Mellody.

The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s menu offers a variety of wings, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads.

Owners Melissa A. Smith, Adam D. Smith, Mark A. Lewis, Donna A. Flemming and Michael and Sandy Tymchuk decided to bring the chain to Boone.

“We’re from Tampa and we have relatives who have a place in Chetola and we would come up here and go to different restaurants and see that there weren’t really sports restaurants around here,” Melissa said.

The Boone location held its grand opening Nov. 5.

“So far it has been great,” Melissa said. “We’re getting a lot of ASU students and we actually have a lot of ASU students working for us so they’re bringing in a lot of people. We’re getting a great response from the public because we have sponsored a lot of little league teams and cheerleading squads.”

The restaurant chain prides itself on getting very involved with the community.

Melissa also hopes to get more involved with Appalachian State University.

“We are going to create basketballs with ‘free wing specials’ or ‘15 percent off your meal’ printed on them and we’re going to have those thrown out into the crowd at the basketball games,” Melissa said.

Currently, the restaurant employs 20 Appalachian students and plans to hire more for daytime shifts if possible.

“The reason I came to work here is because I live near one [in Hickory] and I would eat there three times a week,” said Colin L. Martin, a senior marketing major and server/bartender at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. “The people I work with make it much easier to come to work and enjoy it.”

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s boasts 30 televisions.

The staff makes every effort to channel televisions to the games customers want to see.

“I think that we have enough entertainment on the televisions to draw people in here. It’s basically customer choice,” Melissa said.
