Senior Vonteena Knotts and sophomore Danielle Thorpe led the Appalachian State University women’s indoor track and field team in their season-opening meet Saturday at Holmes Convocation Center.
Knotts earned first place in the long jump at the Appalachian Invitational and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with her 20-feet-.5-inch jump Saturday while Thorpe jumped 20-feet-3.5 inches to earn second place in the event and a provisional bid.

placed six long jumpers in the top eight as junior Monica Johnson
(19-2) and freshmen Bianca Harvey (19-0 3/4), Crystal Dukes (18-8) and
Kiara Crutchfield (18-4 1/2) finished fifth through eighth place.
Knotts and Thorpe also placed first and second in the triple jump with 40-9 and 40-7 3/4 jumps, respectively.
Senior Brittani Williams placed third in the shot put with a throw of
40-7 1/4. She went on to win the weight throw event with a 53-5 3/4
toss.
Freshman Ashley Beale and senior Kaitlyn Heeke placed third and fifth
in the pole vault with jumps of 11-5 3/4 and 10-11 3/4, respectively.
Freshman Bridgette Hills and sophomore Julie Ward tied for second in the high jump at 5-3 3/4.
Sophomore Ashley McKiver led the Mountaineers in the track events with
a second place finish in the 55 meter dash (7.14 seconds) and a sixth
place finish in the 200 meter dash (25.66) one hundredth of a second
behind Johnson.
