CHATTANOOGA—Appalachian State University became the first school in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision to win its third consecutive FCS title, after defeating the University of Delaware 49-21.

“There are no words to describe what we are feeling right now,” ASU senior safety Corey Lynch said after the game. “We have become a family over the past few years, and tonight we played like a family.”

With their team unity leading the way, Appalachian was able take control of the game from the start. On their first possession, senior running back Kevin Richardson scored on a 19-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Armanti Edwards.

On the Mountaineers next possession, sophomore running back Devon Moore scored on a 46-yard touchdown run, to give the Mountaineers a 14-0 lead, early in the first quarter.

A fumble recovery by freshman tight end Daniel Kilgore in the endzone and a 60-yard touchdown reception from senior wide receiver Dexter Jackson pushed the Mountaineer lead to 28-7, just before halftime.

In the second half, the Mountaineers went to their rushing attack to knock time-off the clock and frustrate an already tired Delaware defense.

Appalachian’s defense was able to hold a very talented Delaware offense to just two touchdowns.

“This was the best defensive performance of the season,” Appalachian sophomore defensive lineman Anthony Williams said. “Everything that we have been practicing all year came together.”

The Mountaineers were able to solidify their third consecutive national championship late in the fourth quarter, when senior back-up quarterback Trey Elder scored on a 53-yard run.

With a little under four minutes left in the game Mountaineer fans began to pour onto the field to celebrate with the team.

“I am just thrilled and honored to be part of this team,” ASU senior offensive lineman Kerry Brown said.

“I do not want to sound like a sissy, I have not cried in years, but I cried tonight.”
