Developers constructing new-age residential buildings |

As applications pour into the Appalachian State University Office of Admissions, residential developers are taking action by creating new housing complexes in the heart of the Town of Boone.
The Winkler Organization is currently in the process of cleaning out the Wilcox Emporium as they plan to construct new, apartment-style rental units in the Howard Street building, said Dan Meyer, president of the Boone Chamber of Commerce.
The
Winkler Organization has confirmed that the apartments are under
construction, but has not released the specifications of the new
complex.
“It’s my understanding that the first floor [will be for] shopping, and
there will be apartment housing on the second floor,” Meyer said.
According to its Web site, the Winker Organization currently controls
19 different rental complexes, managing more than 500 individual units
around Boone.
Town of Boone development coordinator David Graham said the Winkler
Organization has not submitted any plans to the town regarding the
development or construction of the complex.
Another complex has been under construction for several months but will have a different twist on standard, rental housing.
The Boone Point complex, located near the intersection of U.S. Highway
421 and U.S. Highway 105 Extension, will be a “mixed-use development,”
consisting of condominiums, a restaurant, retail and medical offices,
Graham said.

The Boone Station Partners, LLC, a group of various investors,
approached the Town of Boone with the idea for a mixed-use residential
complex and received a construction permit Aug. 30, 2007, Graham said.
“[Boone Point] is a very nice project,” Graham said. “It’s something the Town of Boone is encouraging.”
The new complex, which sits on a lot formerly inhabited by
single-family homes, will have a floor area of 40,424 square feet,
Graham said.
Appalachian Architecture confirmed they are heading the construction of the building.
The facility will feature an underground parking deck, bringing the
total number of below-grade and surface parking spaces to 122, Graham
said.
As in the new Winkler Organization units, Boone Point’s residential
section will be on the upper floors, featuring 10 condominiums, Graham
said.
Graham said no business commitments have been solidified as of yet.
The estimated cost of the project is unknown, as Boone Point’s real
estate agent Bob Decamara of Prudential Mountain Properties was
unavailable for comment.
It is not yet clear when the building will be fully operational, Graham said.
“It looks like they are making pretty good progress,” Graham said. “[Construction] is pretty weather-dependent in Boone.”
