Appalachian State University delegates for the Resident Assistants drove in for the prize at the RA Drive-in Conference.
RAs from around the state attended the Drive-in Conference at Winston-Salem State University.
“The Drive-in Conference is an annual event to support RAs from across the state,” Housing and Resident Life coordinator Sarah A. Chapman said. “The conference was for the RAs to gain leadership skills and was a great way to connect with RAs from across the state.”
The conference was hosted by the North Carolina Housing Officers Association (NCHO) and is held
every year around the state.
Appalachian sent a total of 22 people to Winston-Salem for the conference.
“Two full time staff attended. The delegation was advised by four Resident Directors,” Chapman said.
“They organized the delegation and oversaw the development of role call (a delegation cheer), spirit,
program proposals and planning, and the logistics of the delegation’s participation in the conference.”
Chapman called it “the best conference I have been to.”
The RAs participate in the conference by giving presentations.
“The presentations are on leadership skills, program ideas, staff development, and personal well-being,
[among others],” Chapman said.
Director of residence life Dr. Jeff A. Doyle said the conference is to give the RAs ideas for activities to
plan in residence halls that are social and educational. The presentations also covered anything to do
with a, RAs job.
“[Appalachian] delegates presented a total of 12 program sessions out of 24 that were presented total.
[Appalachian] presented half of all the program sessions for the entire state conference,” Chapman
said. “It’s no wonder [Appalachian] won the award for most presentations.”
Appalachian came home from the conference with several awards.
“[Appalachian] also took home the award for ‘Most GA/Professional Staff’ and the ‘Most Spirited
Delegation.’ Even more impressive, our [Appalachian] delegation won the coveted TKO (Total Knock
Out) Award for the overall best delegation at the conference,” Chapman said.
RAs Jennifer I. Dubois of Frank Residence Hall and Thomas R. Rhyne of Eggers Residence Hall won
the award for best presentation.
“Their presentation was titled ‘One Step Up in the World.’ It was an international diversity program with
great food samples from different cultures,” Chapman said.
“An RA’s job is to provide a good role model, and help students adjust to college, and to be leaders,”
Doyle said.
