Students of all majors are encouraged to attend this year’s Outdoor Program Summer Job Fair to find job and internship opportunities in the great outdoors this summer.

Appalachian State University’s recreational management program, the Career Development Center, and the Office of Conferences and Institutes will sponsor the job fair.

The fair will be held Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grandfather Mountain Ballroom of Plemmons
Student Union.

Recreational management faculty member Jerry Cantwell said the fair will feature representatives from
over 65 camps from all over the Southeast, including a camp from Alaska.

“The organizations attending range from camps to conference centers to outfitters and resorts,”
Cantwell said.

He said the fair is a great opportunity for summer employment and internships for students who want to
spend the summer outdoors.

“Students will gain skills in teaching, counseling, leadership and even adventure,” Cantwell said.

Career Development Center counselor Lynette N. Orbovich said these companies pay to come to
Appalachian for these fairs.

“Students don’t realize how interested these companies are in hiring students and many students aren’t
aware of how well these summer jobs or internships can compliment their major,” Orbovich said.

She said a wide variety of majors can benefit from these jobs, including psychology majors who can
work with children in a camp or English and communication majors who can help with event planning
and promotional writing.

According to the Office of Conferences and Institutes Web site, some of the organizations at the fair
include YMCA of Greater Charlotte, U.S. National Whitewater Center, Rockbrook Camp and Camp
Albemarle.

“The more people you talk to and connect with, the more opportunities you’ll know about and have a
chance of getting,” Orbovich said.

Cantwell said students should try to bring multiple copies of their resume and be prepared to sit down
and have an interview at the fair.

“Last year I knew a number of people who got jobs on the spot,” Cantwell said.
