The Appalachian State University women’s basketball team will play its first game of the Southern Conference Tournament today in Charleston, S.C., against the No. 9 seeded University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The Mountaineers, seeded No. 8 in the tournament, will look to create some energy following two recent losses to the College of Charleston and Georgia Southern University to close out the season.

“Heading into the tournament, we were hoping to have some momentum,” ASU head coach Adrienne
Shuler said. “But we lost a couple of games and somehow lost our swagger. We have to find some way
to regain that swagger.”

The Mountaineers are familiar with UNCG, having split both regular season games.  Appalachian won
the most recent game played at home Feb. 19, 58-53.

Senior guard Whitney Tossie led the Mountaineers in the last meeting with 26 points and will look to
provide the same kind of presence today.

“I need to play like I’ve been playing,” Tossie said. “My teammates count on me and I count on them.”

Tossie ranked second in the conference with 13.7 points and 3.1 steals per game.

Shuler said not a lot would change in terms of strategy for today’s game.

“We need to keep them from getting open looks from the three-point line,” she said. “We need to keep
them from gaining confidence.”

If Appalachian can force the Spartans into a half-court game, the team’s chances of winning improve,
Shuler said.

Shuler also emphasized the need for making shots and providing a balanced presence in the paint and
the perimeter.

“Everybody has to step up,” she said. “It’s never been more important than it is now.”
