Appalachian State University’s chapter of the Pi Sigma Epsilon fraternity is organizing a charity golf tournament to be held April 19 at Boone Golf Club.

The 2007 Pi Sigma Epsilon “Tee’n it up for Charity” Golf Tournament raised over $1,500 for charities last year, and senior management major and PSE vice president of marketing Thomas W. Tuck said he wants to break that record this year.

“We’re hoping to raise over $1,580,” Tuck said.

The tournament’s proceeds will go to the Western Youth Network, an organization that works with
children from the fifth grade to 10th grade age range.

Executive Director of the Western Youth Network Jennifer Grubb said the organization provides several
services to youth within Western North Carolina, including Watauga, Avery and Ashe counties.

Western Youth Network heads an after school program, a mentoring program similar to the Big
Brothers Big Sisters program, and a substance abuse program.  The organization also offers a
six-week summer school program.

She said one of the goals of the Western Youth Network is to help youth “learn better ways of handling
situations.”

Grubb said the Western Youth Network offers transportation to and from its after school program, and
will use the proceeds from the tournament to pay off a loan which the organization recently took out in
order to purchase a minibus.

Tuck said in addition to raising money for charity, one of the goals of the event is to build connections
between local businesses and the community.

“We get most of our money from local businesses and sponsorships,” he said.  “It definitely helps the
businesses around here to become socially responsible.”

Tuck said this year’s tournament will be the ninth charity tournament that Pi Sigma Epsilon has
sponsored, and the beneficiaries of the tournament have usually been children’s groups.

Registration for the tournament is open to all who are interested, with a fee of $65 for students and $75
for non-students. The registration fee will include the green fee, the cost of the tournament prize and
lunch.

“There are going to be some great prizes for the winners,” Tuck said.

Those who wish to provide donations can also serve as a t-shirt sponsor, allowing the sponsor’s
company name to appear on the official tournament t-shirt for a fee of $50.

There is also the opportunity to sponsor one hole of the tournament for $100.

All registration forms must be turned in by April 4.

According to an event brochure, participants can choose to register as single players, or as members
of teams of up to four people.

The costs for two-player, three-player and four-player teams as listed on the brochure are $175, $250
and $350 respectively.

Pi Sigma Epsilon is a co-ed business fraternity active on the Appalachian State University campus
since 1980, Tuck said.  Students of all majors are eligible to join.

“It’s a great way for students to market themselves into the business world,” Tuck said.
