After becoming acquainted while on the same committee for Appalachian State University’s Student Government Association, David Mofford and Kendra M. Johnson hope to continue their service to the student body by taking higher positions.
SGA presidential hopeful Mofford, a junior political science major, is from Hickory and served as the student body president of his high school both junior and senior years.
Seeking the vice president spot is Johnson, a junior social work major from Davie County, who was student body president during her senior year of high school.
Mofford has held positions with the SGA Senate, as well as the Campus Resident Student Association (CRSA), and is currently a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Societies. Mofford is also a part of the Student Conduct Board through the Office of Judicial Affairs.
Johnson has an equal amount of experience as well; she serves as Director of External Affairs for SGA, is involved with Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT), is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, and is a part of several university committees such as the Safety Council and the Academic Policy and Procedure Committee.
Mofford said his involvement on campus has made it easy to see the love students have for their
school and community.
“It’s extraordinary to see the loyalty that people show to this place now and to watch alumni come back
and see that; I want to make [the university] an even better place than it is now,” he said.
Mofford and Johnson have a large platform with numerous ideas on how to accomplish their goals.
Making the registration process easier is something students have asked for and is an important goal,
Johnson said.
“Our plan is to have a shopping cart-type system, which is where you choose the classes that you
need for next semester and you put them on hold [before registration time],” Mofford said.
Campaign Goals • Improve the evaluation system for professors and make the information students fill out at the end of the semester public knowledge.
• Continue to improve campus safety to avoid incidents that have occurred on other college campuses.
• Make the registration process easier for students by letting students put classes they need on hold before their registration time.

He said the information will be forwarded to the Registrar’s Office, where it can be evaluated and the
class size can be determined; students can then register from the “shopping cart” to secure their place
in class.
Since Johnson is already a part of the Safety Council, she would like to continue her work on making
the campus a safe place and through this, hopes to avoid incidents that have occurred on other college
campuses across the country.
Mofford would also like to improve the evaluation system for professors and make the information that
students fill out at the end of the semester public knowledge.
“What I would like to do is get [the evaluation information] and have it forwarded to SGA, and we could
put that on our Web site…because it’s not fair that we fill [the evaluations] out and [professors] are the
only ones that get to see those,” he said.
It is also ideal to both candidates that the relationship between Boone and the university continues to
be improved upon.
“[The Town and Gown Committee] is something that we would definitely continue next year. This is
something that I see as very important because without the town’s support and assistance, this
university will not be able to grow and expand to what we would like,” Johnson said.
Mofford wants students to know they can contact the candidates with any questions or concerns they
have.
“We may have ideas, but we need student input to know that those ideas are going to be worthy and
needed here on our campus,” Johnson said.
