Men’s Wrestling
The Appalachian State University wrestling team finished a strong season with a second place finish at the 2008 Southern Conference MatJam.
The Mountaineers finished with 86.5 points, narrowly taking the championship from 19th place University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Senior Scott Ervin claimed the conference title in the 149-pound class with a 4-3 decision in the final.
Senior Terryl Williams and freshman Austin Troutman, at 133 pounds and
184 pounds classes, came up short, both losing in the finals. However,
both earned wild card bids into the 2008 NCAA Championships.
Troutman was also named the SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Every Mountaineer that wrestled, minus one, placed in either second or third place.
Up next for Ervin, Williams and Troutman is the NCAA Championships held today and tomorrow.
Men’s Tennis
The Appalachian State University men’s tennis team continued strong
play defeating the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 5-2 Monday.
With the win, the Mountaineers have won three of their last four
matches as they enter the heart of the Southern Conference schedule.
In doubles action, the Mountaineers completed a clean-sweep of the matches, winning all three to take an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, senior Ryan Brookshaw and juniors Lee Floyd and Bobby Lake garnered victories to secure the win for ASU.
Sophomore Peter Jacobs added another point to the Mountaineer score after the match was already decided.
The win moves Appalachian to 5-5 overall, the first time its been at .500 since Feb. 20.
ASU now begins preparation to play host to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Saturday.
Women’s Tennis
The ASU women’s tennis team continued its struggles as it fell to
Georgia Southern University 5-2 Monday. The loss extends the team’s
losing streak to five games. The last time the Mountaineers were
victorious was on Feb. 24.
The bright spot for Appalachian came from the rackets of junior Lindsay King and sophomore Amanda Cash.
In doubles play, the duo combined to defeat their opponents 8-3.
However, the win did not help ASU, as two wins are required to win the
doubles point.
In singles play, Cash and King came up successful again. Cash defeated
her opponent, 6-3 and 6-3. King followed suit, winning the final match
of the day, 7-6 and 6-2.
The Mountaineers now stand 4-7 overall and 0-4 in conference.
