Dear Doc Yosef,
I haven’t told my boy friend or my roommates, but I’m about 3 weeks late for my period and I’m getting scared. What should I do?
Anxious
Dear Anxious,
A great place to start would be here at Student Health Service. You should make an appointment with one of our three physicians or with one of our four nurse practitioners. We’ll talk with you and ask you several health questions.
Of
course, a urine pregnancy test will be important to do if you are
sexually active. If you are pregnant, it is very important to determine
how many weeks along you might be. We will be a resource for you,
helping you access information as you process lots of questions,
worries, and options. Sudden, “emergency” decisions are almost never
necessary.
Our clinic will be a safe place for you to explore what’s going on. You
have time to decide whether you will continue with the pregnancy or not.
If you’re NOT pregnant, there may be a variety of reasons for a late
period. Stress, weight changes, thyroid problems, and other situations
may cause irregular periods. If everything checks out well, we will
usually reassure you and wait a week or two for your period to start on
its own. Sometimes, we will prescribe medication to start your period.
Come see us. Check out our Web site, www.healthservices.appstate.edu.
Good health,
Doc Yosef
