The election results for the 2008-09 Student Government Association presidential and vice-presidential campaigns were announced Monday afternoon.
Elections Board Chair John B. Bradley said there will be a run-off between the Thomas Brigman-Paul Leak and David Mofford-Kendra Johnson tickets.
Since none of the candidates received a majority vote, the run-off is necessary to determine a winner.
There
were 1,366 students who voted in the election, which is a slight
increase from the 1,070 students who participated last year; however,
the turnout is down from the 2006 election in which 2,881 students cast
their vote.
Mofford-Johnson took 37 percent (513) of the vote and Brigman-Leak received 30 percent (417).
The two tickets not involved in the run-off, Jamison Gillespie-James
Law and Eric Chast-Brendan Croghan, took 18 percent (250) and 13
percent (186), respectively.
SGA president Forrest S. Gilliam said the run-off was expected because there were four tickets in the
campaign.
A similar run-off happened in 2006 when there were four tickets in the election as well, he said.
Vice-presidential candidate Paul Leak said with the number of
candidates involved in the election, he was both anticipating and
preparing for the run-off.
Brigman and Leak said they plan on continuing to campaign this week and hope to increase voter turnout.
Mofford and Johnson said they also realized the possibility of the run-off, and are very excited to be a part of it.
“We are thrilled that we have a little more time to clinch the office,” Mofford said.
Johnson said they also hope to reach more students during their additional campaign time.
The candidates will have contact tables set up in Plemmons Student
Union across from Crossroads this week where they will be available to
talk with interested students.
A debate between the two tickets will also take place Thursday at 5
p.m. in room 114 of the Belk Library & Information Commons.
Voting for the run-off begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday and will continue through 8 a.m. Friday.
